The journey to a new you

Weight-loss surgery is personal, so is the way we care for you. At Ascension Borgess Hospital Bariatric Center, our weight loss doctors, care teams and bariatric surgeons will guide and support you through every step of your journey. We deliver surgical and non-surgical treatments.

Surgical weight loss

We know that deciding to get bariatric surgery is a deeply personal decision, that's why we have options such as sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass.

Non-surgical weight loss

Our non-surgical weight management program offers an individualized, comprehensive approach. Through diet, exercise, lifestyle changes, and medical management options, our team helps you develop the skills to achieve realistic goals and sustain your weight loss.

In-person seminars

Know when it's time to take the first step

Some people may know they’re ready for a weight management program, but others may not. Take our health risk assessment to learn more about your weight and find out if you are putting your health at risk.

If you have a busy schedule, or getting to an in-person seminar is difficult, watching our online seminar may be more comfortable and convenient. Just like an in-person seminar, our online seminars are hosted by one of our experienced doctors or care team members. During the seminar, we’ll explain each step of the weight loss process, what to expect, and share success stories from people who have been through our weight loss programs. After watching the seminar, you can schedule a meeting with our care team to talk about the next steps on your weight loss journey.

During the seminar, we will explain the entire weight loss process step-by-step, and answer any questions you may have in a supportive, judgement-free environment. After the seminar, our weight loss doctors and care team will be available to answer your questions one-on-one.

Frequently asked questions

What are the requirements for bariatric surgery?
There are specific insurance requirements for weight loss surgery. The National Institutes of Health set criteria to determine who will qualify for weight loss surgery. Patients with a BMI greater than 40 qualify for surgery, and patients with a BMI from 35-39.9 with weight related health conditions may also qualify for surgery. Patients also have had to try losing weight by other methods before pursuing surgery.

Will insurance cover my bariatric surgery?
Many insurance companies cover weight loss surgery, but each insurance has their own pre-operative requirements. If you are considering surgery with us, first contact your insurance carrier to learn more about your specific benefits and coverage options. If you need help determining your eligibility for coverage, we can help. For those without insurance or individuals with plans that do not cover bariatric surgery, a self-pay option is also available.

How soon can I return to work after bariatric surgery?
Each patient is different. We typically advise patients to take six weeks off from work. If your job is not physically demanding, you may be able to return to work in 10 - 14 days after a gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, or revision surgery.

Where can I learn more about the weight loss programs offered at Ascension?
We have many resources for you to learn more about our programs. We encourage our patients to attend either an in-person or an online seminar. If you’re not ready to attend a seminar, but are looking for more information, click the button below.
