Ear, nose and throat care at Studer Family Children’s Hospital

Pediatric otolaryngologists, known as ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctors, at Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart specialize in diagnosing and delivering advanced therapeutic and surgical care for ENT conditions. We start by listening to you and your child. Using advanced diagnostics, we find the cause of your child’s symptoms. Then, we take the time to explain your child’s condition and discuss their treatment options. Together, we create a care plan that is right for your child and your family.

Diagnosing and treating ear, nose and throat conditions

Diagnostic tests may be recommended, such as imaging, sleep, and swallow studies. If your child’s condition is related to another health concern, your child’s doctor also works with other pediatric specialists at Studer Family Children’s Hospital. Your child’s specialists collaborate to make a diagnosis and create a comprehensive care plan that’s right for your child.

Pediatric ENT doctors diagnose and treat conditions such as:

  • Airway and breathing disorders
  • Deviated septum
  • Ear infections and fluid
  • Dizziness and balance problems
  • Drooling and excessive salivation

Advanced care for ear, nose and throat conditions

ENT doctor examining a child. When ENT conditions are left untreated, they may become chronic, and senses such as hearing, tasting and smelling can become impaired. Talk with your child’s doctor if you are noticing new or worsening symptoms. Not all ear, nose and throat conditions are treated with surgery. Therapeutic treatments and medication may be an option for your child’s care. Our goal is to help restore your child's ear, nose and throat health, and promote long-term well-being.

For some conditions, surgery may be recommended as part of your child’s care plan. Whenever possible, your child’s doctor uses minimally invasive and endoscopic procedures. With these types of procedures, there may be less pain and a shorter recovery. Our pediatric ENT doctors specialize in procedures such as:

  • Ear tube placement
  • Laryngeal surgery (for voice and swallowing)
  • Sinus surgery
  • Tonsillectomies (tonsil removal)

Your child’s doctor takes the time to explain the procedure to you and your child. And we discuss what to expect before and after surgery. Knowing what to expect can help ease any stress your child may have. Child life specialists are also available to help distract your child before procedures with play, and teach your child relaxation techniques.

A multispecialty team helping to improve your child's hearing

At Studer Family Children’s Hospital, we take a multispecialty approach to care. That means your child benefits from the expertise of both pediatric audiologists and pediatric ENT doctors. We work together to diagnose, treat and manage hearing conditions. If you think your child may have hearing loss, talk with a pediatric specialist. We start with child-friendly hearing tests and evaluations.

If your child is diagnosed with a hearing condition, pediatric audiologists provide advanced care for your child. Your child’s audiologist helps find a hearing device that is right for your child and family.

And as your child grows, we continue to deliver ongoing care for your child. We help coordinate your child's care and connect your family with other specialists and services, such as speech therapy and community support.
